I was fortunate enough to experiment with a Steam Deck for a little while. I spent the whole time making custom controls for L4D2. I've always thought Splatoon 1 has the best shooter controls for console. The key is that the right analog stick aims along the X axis only. And the motion controls aim only on the Y axis. It's brilliant. I tried to emulate this for the Steam Deck. However, I was unable to figure out how to restrict the gyro to the Y axis only. I made a few other adjustments and published it to the community.
It's called "Steam Deck Splatoon Gyro Controls". Published by Gryffin.
You'll definitely need to adjust the gyro and right analog sensitivity to your preference. The gyro will also get off course from time to time. I haven't found a way to quickly reset the center point, but a serviceable option is to move the controller, however awkwardly, until you're aiming straight ahead. Then press start to pause. Then adjust the Steam Deck position to be comfortable in your lap. Then resume the game.
I'd love for you to give it a shot, experiment with the settings, and see how it works out for you. With a little practice, you might be surprised by how effective it is.
